Building open, transparent cycling infrastructure data with the community
VicBUG is a collaborative initiative dedicated to transforming open-source cycling data into safer, smarter, and more enjoyable riding experiences across Victoria.
By curating and harmonising datasets from the Victorian Bicycle Infrastructure Network and OpenStreetMap, we translate raw information into map-ready data. Using routing engines such as GraphHopper, our system intelligently suggests the safest and most efficient paths between two points—or helps riders simply explore on the fly.
Our vision is simple: the more people who actively use and contribute to the network, the stronger it becomes. By capturing GPX ride data and sharing insights with local Bicycle User Groups (BUGs), we aim to empower communities to advocate for a safer, better-connected cycling network across the state.
Through open data, accessibility, and a touch of gamification, we hope to inspire more Victorians to discover, enjoy, and improve their local bike paths. Our methodology, algorithms, and approach are fully transparent so that community groups, developers, and advocates can contribute, refine, and continually improve the system over time.
1. Data Collection We source and curate infrastructure data from OpenStreetMap and Transport Victoria's Bicycle Infrastructure Network, which classifies routes by type—such as protected bike lanes, buffered lanes, or shared streets with sharrows. This refined data is stored in a unified, app-ready database.
2. Algorithm Development Our routing algorithms consider more than just distance—they assess road hierarchy, surface quality, and available bike infrastructure. These parameters are continuously refined based on real-world feedback and community use.
3. Community Validation Through an integrated hazard-reporting and feedback system, riders can verify and enhance infrastructure data directly while they ride. This ensures greater confidence for all users and helps identify areas needing improvement.
Although VicBUG shares the community-minded spirit of not-for-profits, we recognise that transforming Victoria's cycling network requires long-term investment and technical infrastructure that go far beyond what grassroots donations can achieve.
Rather than operate as a donation-based organisation, VicBUG serves as a data and technology partner to existing advocacy groups. By empowering local Bicycle User Groups (BUGs) with high-quality data, visual tools, and transparent mapping systems, we help them amplify their voice and strengthen the collective push for a safer, more connected cycling network.
Our open-data platform is designed to remain freely accessible to cyclists, councils, and community groups—ensuring the foundation for safer cycling is collaborative, transparent, and shared by everyone.
If you're part of a community group, BUG group, or Friends-of group, we'd love to collaborate. We regularly assist local organisations with interactive websites, mapping integrations, and tailored technology solutions to help bring their projects to life.
While the core VicBUG platform remains open and free, we also develop custom applications and map integrations for councils, tourism operators, and regional destinations.
Our gamified "passport" and route-badging systems can be tailored for tourism regions, cycling events, and promotional campaigns—helping communities highlight their cycling assets, attract visitors, and tell local stories through data.
This dual approach allows VicBUG to stay community-focused while offering commercial tools that fund ongoing innovation and expand Victoria's cycling ecosystem.
If you can imagine it, we can build it. Get in touch to discuss how we can collaborate on your next project.
People who want to find safe, protected routes for commuting or recreation. Those who care about infrastructure quality and want to contribute to better data.
Bicycle User Group members who advocate for better infrastructure. VicBUG gives them data-driven tools to support their advocacy work.
Professionals who need accurate cycling infrastructure data to plan improvements and understand where gaps exist in the network.
Organizations who want to replicate this approach in their region. We provide white-label solutions to help other communities build similar tools.
